Importance of Safe Isolation

Unintentional energisation of circuits, machinery and equipment is a leading cause of death and injury among electrical contractors in the UK. To minimise this type of accident, legislation such as “The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989” and HSE guidance on safe working (HSG85) require companies to have effective isolation policies in place. Compliance with the regulations can be achieved and most accidents avoided by installing simple lockout/tagout devices prior to any electrical work being carried out.

Basic Practice for Safe Isolation

  • When working on electrical equipment / energised circuits, it is important that certain basic steps are followed:
  • The correct point of isolation is identified
  • An appropriate means of isolation is used
  • Suitable caution notices should be placed where visible at the point of isolation
  • All conductors must be proved to be dead at the point where work is intended to be carried out
  • The electrical supply can not be reinstated while work is being carried out on any equipment/part of the circuit
  • Isolation of equipment/circuits should be under the control of the person responsible for carrying out work on the isolated conductors
  • Multi-lock hasps/devices should be used in the event of more than one person working on isolated equipment/circuits
